Most Comfortable Cities in Australia

Livability scores combining temperature, humidity, rainfall, and sunshine Updated 2024

Where is the most comfortable place to live in Australia? The answer depends on what matters to you, but our proprietary comfort algorithm combines four key factors: temperature (optimal around 24C), humidity (best below 55%), rainfall (fewer rainy days = higher score), and solar radiation (which correlates with mental health and vitamin D). This produces a single 1-10 comfort score for each city.

The result is a holistic view of livability. A place that's hot and dry scores differently than a place that's warm and humid, even if annual temperatures look similar on paper.

Comfort isn't just about temperature. Our proprietary algorithm weighs temperature against humidity, rainfall, and solar exposure. A city at 28C with high humidity and frequent rain may score lower than a drier 26C location. Melbourne combines relatively moderate heat with manageable humidity and adequate sun, making it one of Australia's most comfortable places to live year-round.

Understanding the Rankings

Our comfort algorithm works month-by-month: for each month, we calculate temperature score (ideal 24C), humidity penalty (more than 55% is uncomfortable), rain penalty (more rainy days reduce comfort), and solar bonus (more sun increases well-being). The monthly scores average out to produce the annual comfort score.

This approach reveals why Melbourne and Perth rank highly despite different climates: Melbourne gets comfortable temperatures and moderate sun; Perth gets consistent warmth and abundant sun. Meanwhile, some humid tropical cities score lower due to relentless moisture, and some cold cities score lower due to winter gloom and rain.

The "ideal" comfort temperature of 24C is based on scientific research on human thermal comfort. Deviation from this (either hotter or colder) reduces comfort. The humidity penalty reflects that high humidity makes heat feel worse and impedes cooling.

About This Data

All weather data comes from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API, which combines official weather station observations with reanalysis models to provide accurate data for any location in Australia. Data shown here is from the 2024 calendar year. Production rankings will use 10 to 30-year normals to smooth out year-to-year variation.

This page uses a proprietary comfort score combining four monthly metrics: temperature score (ideal 24C), humidity penalty (>55% is uncomfortable), rain penalty (more rainy days reduce score), and solar bonus (more sun increases well-being). Scores are averaged across 12 months to produce the annual comfort score (1-10).
